The car is run by a combination of gasoline and the electric power in the battery, which is recharged by the more traditional gasoline powered internal combustion energy when you hit the break. As your car slows down, the energy you would take to move is instead changed into electric energy which recharges the battery, preventing it from needing to be charged like more traditional electric cars.
